Mistral AI, a French AI company headquartered in Paris that develops high-performance large language models (LLMs), has raised €3 billion in a Series D funding round at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion.
The round represents the largest equity fundraising by a European technology company in history, three years after Mistral AI’s launch.
The startup, known primarily for its open-source large language models, has become one of the world’s leading generative AI developers since 2023, as per IBM. It announced it would use the new funds to expand its frontier research, computing capacity and infrastructure, while supporting its commercial growth and international expansion.
The company currently operates across 20 countries and works with more than 125 global enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.
“Three years ago, we started Mistral with a simple belief that organisations should not have to choose between frontier AI performance and control over how that technology is deployed,” said Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral AI, via LinkedIn.
“That’s why we built Mistral on open-weight models from day one.”
The funding, as per the CEO, matters but more so the trust behind it. “Not only a vote of confidence in a valuation. A vote of confidence in a vision: AI that is cutting-edge and open, powerful and controllable, global and independent.”
Among those supporting Mistral are tech giants ASML, Samsung and Nvidia.
The funding comes as Mistral positions “sovereign AI” as an alternative to dependence on a single AI provider. Its approach combines open-weight models, infrastructure, computing capacity and products, with a focus on giving organizations greater control over their data, models, computing and deployed systems.
In July 2025, for example, the startup announced it had launched AI for Citizens, an initiative to help governments and public institutions build their own AI strategies instead of depending on outside vendors.
“One size fits all AI offerings cannot meet the tactical nor strategic needs of regions and countries. Understanding local languages, incorporating local context, and aligning with unique priorities in each region and country requires AI solutions that are designed and tailored to fit the specific use cases and requirements of those regions, countries and their people,” the company said at the time.
AI for Citizens is already working with the public sector in countries such as France, Luxembourg, Singapore, the Netherlands, England and Switzerland.
Mistral defines AI sovereignty across four dimensions: keeping data within an organization’s boundaries; using controllable and customizable models; maintaining private and predictable computing; and ensuring that production systems are controllable and auditable.
This latest round includes strategic and financial investors from Europe, Asia and North America. Samsung Electronics led the Series D, while new investors include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Existing investors, including ASML, a16z, NVIDIA and Salesforce Ventures, also participated.
